Waahto Brewhouse – charcoal-grilled food and harbour life in Savonlinna

Waahto Brewhouse combines grilled food, drinks and a harbour terrace. It switched to Solmio-kassa in spring 2026, adapting services throughout the season.

At Savonlinna’s harbour, a restaurant visit might mean a meal by Lake Saimaa, an evening on the terrace or a private celebration. At Waahto Brewhouse, these occasions share the flavours of a charcoal grill and a location right by the market square. Since spring 2026, Solmio-kassa has been part of the restaurant’s day-to-day operations.

Meet Waahto Brewhouse

Waahto’s address is Satamapuistonkatu 5, but its surroundings say more about the place: central Savonlinna, the harbour and Lake Saimaa. Guests can settle in for a leisurely meal or stop for a drink while exploring the town.

The kitchen has a clear starting point. As the restaurant puts it on its website: “The charcoal grill is the heart of our kitchen, bringing the authentic flavour of smoke and fire to our dishes.” The drinks selection includes local and international options, both on tap and by the bottle. A covered, heated terrace extends the restaurant into the harbour setting.

Waahto also welcomes groups. Tailored food and drink packages are available for private functions, from celebrations and meetings to team get-togethers. In summer, the covered terrace can also be booked.

Waahto’s history at the harbour dates back to 2013. Today, events complement its restaurant offering: the advertised summer 2026 programme included morning sessions associated with the Savonlinna Opera Festival on the terrace. Waahto was also listed as an official food and drink venue for the Saimaa tournament.

The person behind it

Waahto’s business owner is Janne Kupiainen. Running a harbour restaurant takes collaboration between the dining room and the kitchen. Food, service and event arrangements are different parts of the same guest experience.

Where they started

Waahto’s season is not simply a succession of identical restaurant evenings. The terrace, diners, private functions and events create different service situations. A summer morning event and an evening meal each require their own preparation.

In spring 2026, Waahto replaced its old tills with Solmio-kassa. The change took place before the summer season, but the arrangements were not fixed for the whole season: the collaboration and services were adjusted as needed along the way.

Restaurant manager Jani was particularly concerned about busy weekend drinks sales. How would the new tills perform, and would all the products be quick enough to find?

What they wanted to improve

A key aspect of Waahto’s collaboration was the ability to adapt to the restaurant’s needs while the season was already underway. Not everything had to be settled at once in spring.

Entering food orders provided a practical example. On a small till, writing a dish-specific note for the kitchen was awkward. This task needed more screen space.

Why Solmio

For Waahto, adaptability is a defining feature of the collaboration. After the spring switch, services were adjusted to needs that arose during the season. The story is therefore not just about replacing old tills, but about continuing to work together in the restaurant’s everyday operations.

The restaurant manager highlights the easy-to-learn back-office system and quick access to help. Creating a new product and adding it to the till’s home screen was straightforward.

Beyond working at the till, knowing stock levels is important at Waahto. The team tracked them using inventory management built into the POS system. An inventory was created for the restaurant’s products, and product linking reduces the stock balance as each product is sold.

Rollout in spring, collaboration throughout the season

Waahto switched its POS system at the beginning of April 2026. The old tills were replaced by Solmio-kassa. According to the restaurant manager, the back-office system was easy to learn. Whenever something was not immediately clear, customer service provided help quickly.

Daily use also revealed something to improve. Writing a note for the kitchen about a food order was awkward on the small tills. A larger screen was acquired for POS use. The restaurant manager says that adding notes then worked brilliantly too.

The change illustrates what adapting the collaboration during the season means in practice: a difficulty spotted during daily work was addressed with a change suited to the restaurant’s needs.

What changed day to day

  • Easy product management and quick support — creating a product and adding it to the till’s home screen was straightforward. Customer service provided help quickly when needed.
  • Stock follows sales — product linking reduces the stock balance as the product is sold.
  • More room for notes — a larger POS screen made it easier to write dish-specific messages for the kitchen.
  • Smooth weekend drinks sales — initial worries about till performance and finding products proved unfounded.

Restaurant manager Jani shares his experience:

We started using Solmio-kassa at the beginning of April. The back-office system was easy to learn, and if there was something you couldn’t work out straight away, customer service was extremely quick to help. Creating a product and adding it to the home screen was also easy and straightforward. Another good thing is that you can create a separate inventory for the restaurant’s products, and product linking reduces the stock as each product is sold. The only downside of the small tills was when we were selling food and needed to add a note for the kitchen about a particular dish. But we got a slightly larger screen for that, and then this worked brilliantly too.

You can easily do lots of important things yourself in the back office.

My biggest concern was how the tills would work when drinks sales really picked up at the weekend, and whether we’d find all the products quickly enough. But that worry turned out to be completely unfounded. The tills are really handy for festivals, for example.

Advice for other business owners
