Ravintola Walhalla

A new chapter for Restaurant Walhalla – history and thoughtful cooking in Suomenlinna

At Tony Hellström and Staffan Mathlin’s Walhalla, Suomenlinna’s history meets the sea and carefully prepared food. Solmio joined in spring 2026.

Walhalla’s dining room

At the southern tip of Suomenlinna, a restaurant visit begins long before you sit down. The King’s Gate, historic fortifications and Kustaanmiekka Strait make the journey part of the evening. People come to Restaurant Walhalla to celebrate, gather and enjoy unhurried meals, as guests have done here since 1952. In spring 2026, Solmio-kassa became part of the restaurant’s daily operations.

Meet Restaurant Walhalla

Walhalla is a restaurant and celebration venue in Suomenlinna, around 80 metres from the King’s Gate. Its home is the historic Delwig caponier, originally built as part of the fortress defences. Its conversion into a restaurant was completed in 1951, and the following year it hosted guests during the Helsinki Olympics.

History also features on the menu. Group menus bear names such as Ehrensvärd, Blomstedt and Delwig. Finnish and locally produced ingredients underpin the cooking. The same restaurant complex includes Pizzeria Nikolai and the Terrace 1917 rooftop terrace: a fortress visit can end with dinner, pizza or some time on the terrace.

Walhalla welcomes individual diners, groups of at least ten, and corporate and family celebrations. Alongside meetings and private events, it offers catering services and tableware hire for celebration venues in Suomenlinna. The premises have been renovated with respect for their original character.

The people behind Walhalla

Tony Hellström runs Walhalla with his business partner Staffan Mathlin. The historic setting has room for both a celebratory dinner and a meal to round off a day on the island.

In a statement published by the Governing Body of Suomenlinna, Tony summed up the restaurant’s idea:

“Here, history, the sea and carefully prepared food come together.”

Initial doubts, a convincing first season

Walhalla became a Solmio customer in spring 2026. Tony had experience with previous POS solutions, but Solmio was unfamiliar. He wondered whether it would meet the restaurant’s needs.

After the first season, Tony highlights speed and reliability. Above all, he values the personal service.

“Compared with our previous POS solutions, Solmio has been quick and reliable. Above all, I would highlight the personal service. We didn’t know Solmio and wondered whether it would be any good.

After the first season, we can say that it is, and we’re happy to continue working together. The best fit for us.”

When you visit Walhalla

Allow time for the journey, too. The route to Walhalla takes you through Suomenlinna’s scenery, and the nearby King’s Gate is a natural place to stop before your meal.

The menu has featured fish of the day and Walhalla-style French toast for dessert. For groups, the Walhalla celebration menu has included a Kustaanmiekka fish platter, crayfish soup and pan-fried whitefish. Check the season’s menu and opening hours when booking.
